Why Are My Brakes Squeaking?

Brake noise is your car asking for attention. Squeaking, squealing, and grinding each have common causes, and a brake inspection is the right way to find out which one applies to your vehicle.

Squeaking and squealing

High-pitched squeaking or squealing can come from brake pads that are worn down to their wear indicators, glazed pad surfaces, or vibration between the pad and caliper. Some noise is normal in certain conditions — like light morning moisture — but persistent noise deserves an inspection.

Grinding

A grinding or metal-on-metal sound usually means the brake pad friction material is gone and the backing plate is contacting the rotor. This can damage the rotor and should be checked promptly.

Have the brakes inspected

Brake noise has several possible causes, and the right fix depends on what the inspection finds — pads, rotors, calipers, or hardware. We inspect the brake system before recommending any repair.
