Brake Pads vs. Brake Rotors: What's the Difference?

Brake pads and rotors are the two parts drivers hear about most, and they work as a team. Understanding what each does helps you make sense of what a brake inspection finds.

What brake pads do

Brake pads are the friction material that presses against the rotor to slow the car. They're a wear item — they're designed to be replaced as the friction material wears down.

What brake rotors do

Rotors are the metal discs the pads clamp onto. They dissipate heat from braking. Rotors can wear, warp, or become scored, and depending on their condition they may be machined or replaced.

They're replaced together or separately

Pads and rotors don't always need replacing at the same time. We inspect both and recommend what your car actually needs — sometimes it's pads only, sometimes pads and rotors, sometimes other components like calipers or the master cylinder.
