What Are the Signs of a Bad CV Axle?

CV axles transfer power from the transmission to the drive wheels. When a CV joint or axle wears, it produces some distinctive symptoms.

Clicking when turning

A clicking or popping noise when turning — especially at low speeds in a parking lot — is a classic sign of a worn outer CV joint.

Grease on the wheel and vibration

A torn CV boot throws grease onto the wheel and suspension. Once the grease is gone, the joint wears quickly, which can cause vibration at speed.

Have it inspected

CV axle symptoms can overlap with other suspension or tire issues. We inspect the axles, boots, and related components before recommending a repair.
