What Is Transfer Case Fluid Service?

The transfer case in a four-wheel-drive or all-wheel-drive vehicle splits power between the front and rear axles. Like the differential, it relies on clean fluid to protect its gears.

What the transfer case does

The transfer case sends power to both axles. Its fluid lubricates the gears and chain (if equipped) and carries heat away from the moving parts.

Why fluid service matters

Transfer case fluid degrades over time and can collect metal wear. Old fluid reduces lubrication and increases wear on the case's internal components.

The interval depends on your vehicle

Not every vehicle has a transfer case — only four-wheel-drive and AWD models do. If yours does, we service the fluid on the schedule that fits your vehicle and driving.
