What Does an Ignition Coil Do?

Ignition coils convert the battery's low voltage into the high voltage needed to fire the spark plugs. A failing coil causes a misfire in the cylinder it serves.

Misfire and check engine light

A failing ignition coil usually triggers a misfire in one cylinder — felt as a rough idle, hesitation, or shaking. The check engine light comes on with a misfire code that identifies the cylinder.

Worse under load

Ignition coil problems often get worse under load — accelerating or climbing — because the demand on the ignition system is higher.

Coils and plugs go together

Spark plugs and ignition coils work as a pair. We inspect both and recommend replacing what your car actually needs — not a blanket replacement.
