Signs of Bad Spark Plugs

Spark plugs ignite the air-fuel mixture in each cylinder. When they wear, the engine runs less smoothly and efficiently. The signs are recognizable.

Spark plugs being inspected for wear and gap during a tune-up

Rough idle and misfire

Worn plugs can cause a rough or shaky idle, hesitation on acceleration, or an active misfire — often accompanied by a check engine light with a misfire code.

Poor fuel economy

If the plugs aren't firing efficiently, the engine burns more fuel. A noticeable drop in fuel economy alongside rough running can point to ignition wear.

Hard starting

Worn plugs can make the engine harder to start, especially in cold weather. If starting is sluggish, the ignition system is one place to look.
