Alternator vs. Battery: Which Is the Problem?

A dead battery and a bad alternator can both leave you stranded, but the symptoms are different. Testing the battery and charging system is how you tell them apart — not guessing.

A battery and alternator being tested during a charging system diagnosis

When it's the battery

If the car starts slowly or not at all but the lights and dash work when jumped, the battery is a likely cause. Batteries also have a finite life and can fail in hot weather.

When it's the alternator

If the car starts but the battery keeps dying, the lights dim at idle, or a battery or charging warning light comes on, the alternator may not be charging the battery. A charging-system test confirms it.

We test before we replace

We test the battery and charging system to find the actual cause before recommending a battery, alternator, or starter. That way you replace the part that's actually failed.
